Chapter 6
Oscar insisted on visiting Dr Shepard again, much to Avaâs disappointment. What was even worse was that she had to drive herself to the doctorâs office.
âI donât need it as much as you think,â Ava huffed, her fingers tightening around the wheel.
Oscar raised his eyebrow.
âNeed I remind you what that doc said before you were discharged?â he asked her smugly.
Ava kept silent. Of course she did. She had healed well⦠physically. Her mental state on the other hand had received a massive reset. It was as if she had to relearn everything. There were things that had changed, such as her fears for one. Now she was afraid of the dark, and she hated enclosed spaces. She knew her previous self would have laughed at such things.
She only knew because it was what she had been told. She recalled the time she had to get something from the evidence room. It was located in the basement of the station, with rows and rows of shelves and lockers and boxes of old files. It was also not as well lit as it should be.
The darkness did something to her. It had filled her with indescribable fear. She was rooted to the spot, her hands becoming clammy, and all she heard was the sound of her own blood pounding in her ears.
Ava felt the presence of others surrounding her, and she had whipped her head back only to find an open door and a busy hallway.
The officer she had come with tapped her on the shoulder and she jumped, her heart rate increasing. She willed herself to calm down, but the officer had seen something.
âSomethingâs different, Detective. I didnât know it would affect you this badly.â
It had been a throwaway comment, of course, but since then, Ava had questioned herself.
When she had left, Dr. Shepard had told her to inform him of any changes in her memory. Ava admitted, with a guilty look, that she had been holding back for the last few weeks, much to Oscarâs disappointment.
When they entered the doctorâs office, he had looked at both of them questioningly.
âWho is it this time?â he asked.
âHer, actually,â Oscar replied, pointing at Ava.
The doctor did his routine checkup, and Ava answered as honestly as she could. Getting into details of her most recent nightmare had been difficult. She avoided Oscarâs eyes. She didnât want him to think that she was incapable of getting over things, and now it was getting in the way of work.
âSo far, youâre looking good,â the doctor said, âbut I do expect updates a bit sooner. However, I would like to refer you to a friend of mine. If you ever have these dreams again and find them affecting your everyday routine, and Iâm saying be honest with yourself, call this number.â
Ava took the card and walked back to the car.
âThat was uncomfortable, and I never want to do that again,â she said, shrinking into the car.
âWhy didnât you say anything?â Oscar asked.
âDonât worry too much. Iâll get over it eventually.
